    Lahti: 1
    Lax: 0
    Niinistö: 2
    Vanhanen: 2

  • Rip images from PDFs: Xpdf for Windows

Just came across Xpdf for Windows when googling. At least pdfimages seems to work fine. Didn’t try the rest, yet.

  • Software for Starving Students

“The Software for Starving Students CD enhances the Windows and Mac desktop computing experiences by providing an easy way to install free, high-quality software titles via a user-friendly interface. It includes popular open source programs like Firefox and OpenOffice, intended to help students learn about and benefit from open source and free software programs. • Quick tip: GIMP as Irfanview's external editor

If you’re using GIMP and Irfanview (in Windows), set up GIMP as your external editor in Irfanview’s Options, under ‘Misc 2’ tab by filling the “Set external viewer/editor” field with “C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin\gimp-win-remote.exe gimp-2.2.exe” (not including the quotation marks, i.e. only fill in what is inside them). Change the version numbers if you’re using something other than GIMP 2.0 and Gimp-Win-Remote 2.2.

Now you can go directly from viewing an image in Irfanview to editing it in GIMP by selecting ‘Open with external editor’ from the File menu.

  • Forgot your Windows password?

“The Ophcrack LiveCD is a bootable Linux CD-ROM containing Ophcrack 2.0 and a set of tables. It allows for testing the strength of passwords on a Windows machine without having to install anything on it. Just put it into the CD-ROM drive, reboot and it will try to find a Windows partition, extract its SAM and start cracking.”

  • More stolen code in the XCP DRM

“The previous stories that portions of the LGPL’d LAME code appeared in the XCP software from First4Internet, which Sony BMG has been forced to publicly disown and apologize for, appear to be the tip of the iceberg. There is new evidence […] that the XCP software appears to include portions of LAME, mpglib, and VLC’s drms.c.”

  • Gimp-win-remote won't work

Just a quick note to myself: when Gimp-win-remote won’t work, adding “gimp-2.2.exe” (with the double quotes, although I suppose it would work without them, too) between the “gimp-win-remote.exe” and “%1” in the gimp-win-remote.exe\shell\open\command registry key does the trick. Picked this up from gimpwin-users.

  • Linux-pelikonsoli rantautuu Suomeen
