Audio through DVI is a hack, but it used to work until I upgraded from Lucid to Precise; afterwards there was no sound from the monitor. This is <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/alsa-driver\/+bug\/864735\">a regression introduced in Oneiric<\/a>, due to the <a href=\"http:\/\/phoronix.com\/forums\/showthread.php?62635-No-HDMI-sound-after-upgrade-to-Kubuntu-11.10-with-my-hd4770&amp;p=232613#post232613\">reverse engineered<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/phoronix.com\/forums\/showthread.php?62635-No-HDMI-sound-after-upgrade-to-Kubuntu-11.10-with-my-hd4770&amp;p=232499#post232499\">Radeon code causing issues in some setups<\/a>. Thus upstream have figured it best to play safe and disable Radeon audio by default.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, it&#8217;s pretty easy to re-enable: add <code>radeon.audio=1<\/code> to your <code>GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT<\/code> and run <code>sudo update-grub<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, you&#8217;ll then run the risk of encountering the aforementioned issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Edit:<\/strong> Briefly after enabling, the HDMI audio again stopped working.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Edit 2:<\/strong> It&#8217;s actually flash audio that&#8217;s not working through HDMI as other audio is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Edit 3:<\/strong> The flash problem was due to having an old flash package installed instead of one from the (Oneiric) partner repo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve my computer connected to my speaker-equipped monitor through a DVI-HDMI cable.
