Xbox 360 Scratches Game Disks
“A growing number of Xbox 360 customers are reporting having problems with their [discs] getting scratched by the DVD drive when switching the unit’s position from vertical to horizontal and vise versa.. Initially we thought this was the usual fanboy vs. hater propaganda that swirls around the launch of any new console like this. Although I categorized this as a bug/glitch, I wouldn’t directly point the finger at Microsoft with this one. Having said that, I’d like to think I would never tilt my PS2 with the power on, but it’s easy enough to imagine a hard core gamer teenboy in the middle of a mission, when mom comes in with her vacuum cleaner and you just think “well maybe it’ll take it just this once…”

300GB disc set to challenge DVD
“A computer disc about the size of a DVD that can hold 60 times more data will go on sale in 2006, according to its American developer InPhase Technologies […]. The discs, holding 300GB each, use so-called Tapestry holographic memory technology to store data by interference of light. They are also able to read and write data at 10 times the speed of a normal DVD.”
Looks like maybe I can skip Blu-Ray and HD-DVD altogether. I even have yet to burn a dual layer DVD!
Haaveilua suorittimista
Wikipediassa on listattu Barton-ytimellä varustetut AMD Athlon XP -suorittimet teknisine tietoineen. Nykyinen suorittimenikin, Athlon XP 2600+ (1917/333 MHz, TDP 68.3 W) löytyy listalta. Jos lähtisin tuota päivittämään niin vaihtoehtoja olisivat XP 3000+ (2100/400 MHz, TDP 68.3 W) ja XP 3200+ (2200/400 MHz, TDP 76.8 W).
3000+:ssa saisin ytimen kellotaajudessa megahertseissä parisataa lisää, AMD:n omalla mittarilla 400 (2600:sta 3000:een). 3200+:n kellossa puolestaan olisi kolmesataa megahertsiä nykyistä enemmän, mikä tekee 600 AMD-yksikköä. Samalla kuitenkin lämmönhaihdutusvaatimus nousisi melkein kymmenen wattia, joten kone puhkuisi tuon asentamisen jälkeen todennäköisesti paljon nykyistä kovempaan ääneen lämpöjä ulos sisuksistaan.
Tiedä sitten kuinka paljon väylätaajuuden nostaminen 333:sta 400 MHz:iin sinänsä nopeuttaisi konetta pelkän ydintaajuuden nostamisen vaikutusten ohella.
3200+:sta on tuon Wikipedia-artikkelin alaviitteiden mukaan olemassa myös 333 MHz:n väylätaajuudella toimiva versio, mutta sitä myydään vain HP-koneiden vakiovarusteena. Lisäksi sen lämmönhaihdutusvaatimuksia ei ole listattu, ja se voi ainakin 400:n ja 333 MHz:n 3000+:n tietojen perusteella olla enemmänkin kuin nopeammalla väylätaajuudella toimivan version.
Hintaero noiden kahden välillä on tämän kirjoitushetkellä suurimmillaan noin kaksikymmentä euroa, mutta A-socket-Sempronien saatavuus uutena alkaa jo olla tosi heikkoa.
