Feature from PC Magazine: Hard Drive Healers

“When […] Ontrack engineers carried the [hard disk]drive into their clean room and opened it up, the head was damaged, and the platters were caked with dust and smoke residue. But a week later, the company sent us an e-mail. Its engineers had recovered 100 percent of the data.

For Ontrack, it was just another week at the office. Apparently the company recovers data from fire-damaged drives all the time. And that’s one of the easier tasks. In 2003, Ontrack engineers successfully recovered files from a drive that arrived in Minnesota with a bullet hole in it. A few weeks later, they salvaged a disk that had spent three months at the bottom of a lake.”

Arctic Monkeys Sell Thousands on First Day

The Arctic Monkeys sold almost 120,000 copies of their debut album in a single day, and it may become one of the year’s top-sellers, retailers said. […]

The British band shot from obscurity to fame in a matter of months, thanks partly to savvy use of the Internet to market their music to fans.”

Energiansäästölamput aiheuttavat radiohäiriöitä

“Lähes neljäsosa [EMC-valvontahankkeessa] testatuista lampuista ei läpäissyt johtuvien radiohäiriöiden testiä. […]

Energiansäästölamppujen toinen tekninen ongelma on laadun huomattava vaihtelu.”

Star Wreck -teemalauantai YLE Teemalla 4.2.

“Yle Teeman Star Wreck -ilta näyttää melkein kaiken mitä Star Wreckistä on näytettävissä.

Wireless USB from Belkin

“Belkin is jumping on the wireless USB bandwagon with this four-port hub. That’s right, it’s packing wireless USB, letting you roam free with any USB device. Using Motorola spinoff Freescale’s Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, this hot connection gives you data rates that are a hundred times faster than Bluetooth.”

Correcting audio delay in MPEG files (Windows)

God, how can this be so hard? After wasting hours trying to google a way to set, using Windows software, the audio delay in an MPEG stream when muxing .m1v with .mp2 files, I finally came up with the following solution: download mp3DirectCut, then insert, or actually, copy and paste (as even with this software I wasn’t able to find a way to insert silence into the stream) the amount of delay of audio data into the beginning. Save and multiplex the new audio stream with your video. Enjoy the now non-displaced audio track.
