Very interesting, thank you! You wouldn’t expect such behaviour from non-carnivorous animals, although I do know this kind of thing sometimes occurs when animals are under stress. But these goats seem to live in good conditions, which made me wonder about the ears.

Lincoln Park Zoo posted this video of their goats being treated to an Easter surprise. What struck me (in the otherwise fun video) as odd was that some of the individuals (particularly visible from 0:10 on) seem as if their ears had been… eaten away. Does that happen, is this some other kind of injury, or is it just normal variation between individuals?

No offence, but pornography is the last thing you’ll want to recommend for reliable, anatomically correct demonstration of this (too). There may be such material, but as with almost every factual subject in porn, it’s overwhelmed by stuff where it’s faked (in all kinds of dumb, obvious and less obvious ways), so for someone looking to educate themselves, they better look elsewhere.

Awesome shot. That’s an Arctic Tern (the fox is Arctic as well). Terns nest on the ground and are very (”fiercely”, as WP puts it) protective of their nests and young. The fox may have been after the birds’ offspring right before this happened, but it may just as well have gotten itself too close to the nest without knowing about it, the terns won’t tolerate anyone nearby. (They attack people just the same.)

Is there a list of devices with known hardware-limited functionality? I tried Sleeptime last night on my Motorola Defy+ and got the ”Measurement incomplete” message as Scotty above. I’ve not yet ruled out it’s something in my phone’s settings, but I figured I could save myself the trouble of troubleshooting if you can just outright say it’s not going to work.

*Edit:* Note to other Defy+ owners: Sleeptime works with battery saving and in-pocket detection disabled, and screen set to never sleep on AC power (in Settings/Applications/Development). They may not all be necessary, I just haven’t yet narrowed it down to ones that are.

Just to pick up on your mentioning bug reports: (archived) Debian bug #664748 and Launchpad bug #555852 now seem to track this issue.

Kaikkein tärkein motivaatioon vaikuttava tekijä minulle on se, miten hyvin tai huonosti kyselyt on laadittu. Esimerkiksi tämän kyselyn kaikissa kysymyksissä (kuten tätä edellisessä kysymyksessä) ei otettu kunnolla huomioon kaltaistani vastaajaa, joka vastaa joka tapauksessa jokaiseen tarjottuun kyselyyn. Toinen kardinaalivirhe on surkea käytettävyys: ylimääräinen säätö ohjeistuksessa (”älä käytä selaimen painikkeita (niin kuin niitä on tarkoitettu käytettävän), älä tee sitä äläkä tätä (koska hieno kyselymme hajoaa)” – ei näin!) ja pakotetut valinnat (kuten se, että tämän kyselyn kysymyksissä ei muka pääse taaksepäin, vain eteenpäin) sun muu sellainen. Toisinaan kyselyissä suomen kieli on niin huonoa että tekee mieli lyödä jotakuta. Mitä enemmän tällaisia huonosti laadittuja kyselyitä, sitä vähemmän motivaatiota minulla on jatkaa paneelissa. Täydellisesti ei voi joka kerta onnistua, mutta epäonnistuneiden kyselyiden motivaatiolle tekemää vahinkoa voi vähän paikata tarjoamalla joka kyselyn lopussa mahdollisuutta antaa kyseistä kyselyä koskevaa metapalautetta, joka huomioidaan seuraavia kyselyitä laadittaessa.
