Suomen 6. rääkkähaikara Nivalassa – Bongariliitto
24.7. kuvasi Päivi Uusivirta Nivalassa pienen vaalean haikaran, joka oli ilmoitettuna Tiiraan lehmähaikarana. 25.7. laji varmistui kuvista Suomen kuudenneksi rääkkähaikaraksi (Ardeola ralloides). Edellisen kerran rääkkähaikara on nähty Suomessa (vain yhden havainnoijan näkemänä) Heinolassa kesäkuussa 2009, mutta edellisestä bongattavasta linnusta on peräti 34 vuotta, Reisjärvellä 28.9.1990.

The redpoll finch saga: How two bird species just became one
[The] hoary redpoll finch, a small, plump bird commonly found in the Arctic, will be reclassified as the same species as the common redpoll finch, a smaller bird found in similar habitats. This announcement came as a direct result of a CU Boulder-led study which found that, despite their different looks, very few genetic differences exist between the two types of birds.

BirdLife Suomi | Suomelle uusi lintulaji lensi rengastajan verkkoon Siikajoella
Suomen ensimmäinen kultakulmasirkku rengastettiin lauantaiaamuna Siikajoella. Keski- ja Itä-Siperiassa pesivä laji on Euroopassa suurharvinaisuus. Koko maanosasta on alle 20 havaintoa. Samana aamuna rengastajan verkkoon lensi myös Suomen toinen pikkupajusirkku.

After 10 years of work, landmark study reveals new ‘tree of life’ for all birds living today
The largest-ever study of bird genomes has produced a remarkably clear picture of the bird family tree. Published in the journal Nature today, our study shows that most of the modern groups of birds first appeared within 5 million years after the extinction of the dinosaurs.
