Somebody comment on this god damnit, I want to know whether I got it right or just thought I did.

Just submitted Finnish translations for the three introductory videos. The process was a bit sluggish, but it was mostly due to my slow connection and poor video support in the browsers at my disposal. But the interface is pretty easy at least when I opted to download the subtitles, translate them locally and then upload the resuls and just do the review step in the browser. I appreciate the Universal Subtitles effort and really feel it’s important for the future of web video and global accessibility. Thank you!

Now a couple of remarks:

1. The ’edit title’ link next to the sharing box is slightly confusing: apparently, the title isn’t meant to be translated, but when translating a video, one expects such a link to mean just that. Which begs the question: why aren’t the video titles translatable? It’d be nice to also get a translated title when the video has translated subtitles.

2. This feedback form asks for my e-mail address even though I’m logged in and have thus provided my address already, so it’s redundant.

I won’t. I found all the rooms pretty horrible, and was just barely able to pick few as ”don’t like it” to have some nuance between them and all those I found plain hatable. The contemporary ones probably appealed to me the most, but everything, even the ones apparently intended as ’minimal’, was so cluttered I just couldn’t bring myself to like any of ’em.

At a glance it seems the article lacks a clear definition of the purpose of having trademarks in the first place. ”The essential function of a trademark is to exclusively identify the commercial source or origin of products or services”, but to what end? I didn’t read the whole article through so maybe I missed it, but in that case it should probably be closer to the ”Fundamental concepts” title or right at the intro, as it seems pretty essential to me.

After recent changes in Jamendo’s streaming service, it’s no longer possible to seek forward nor backward in playing time of their Vorbis streams using Totem. VLC however lets me seek just as before. Also, seeking does work if I opt the stream as MP3.

My main desktop is an up-to-date Lucid, and I’ve also reproduced this in a virtual Maverick.

Set up: have Jamendo stream using external player, with Vorbis+m3u or Vorbis+xspf. Associate said playlist format with Totem. Start streaming, try to skip time within the playing track.

I’ve found an upstream bug which seems related: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=629212#. I didn’t link it straight away because I’m not sure if it’s the exact same one as this.
